About me

Born into a musical family Debojyoti has shown an inclination, love and joy towards music from his early childhood. As time passed by the joy turned into passion for the music. He started learning Vocal Classical at the tender age of 5 under the tutelage of his mother Smt. Leena Gupta. Simultaneously he was initiated into Tabla by his parents, which gave him a firm foundation of the Swara and Laya aspects before groomed into the art of playing Sitar.

He received his initial training in Sitar from respected Ramakanta Singhji at Silchar. He was extremely fortunate when in one of his concert in the year 1992 the renowned personality of our country and internationally famed Sarod player Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta happened to be present and on hearing him playing the Sitar Panditji was so impressed that he at once decided to make Debojyoti his disciple and for eight years he gained talim from him. Once again he was very much fortunate to be noticed by India's one of the best ever and world famous Sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan of famous Etawah gharana and Ustadji too noticed tremendous talent in debojyoti and accepted him as his disciple in the year 2000 and since Debojyoti is gaining talim under Ustadjis guidance.

Debojyoti was awarded TRIBANK DAZI JOSHI PUROSHKAR from Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidhyalaya Mandal, Mumbai for standing 1st in the Visharad Purna examination in the year 1995. He also received National Scholarship in Music from Human Resource Development, Govt. of India in the year 1995 & 1996. He has traveled extensively throughout India and hasgiven lot of solo performances at various prestigious music conferences like Pt. Harihar Shukla Sangeet Samaroh Kolkata, Pt. Radhika Mohan Mitra Sangeet Sammelan, Kolkata, Bhab Rang music festival Bhavnagar, Sangeet Sankalpa Music festival at Mumbai, Rajkot, Gandharva Mahavidhyalaya Sangeet Miraj, Sangeet Bharati music conference, Assam and so on…

A graded artist of All India Radio, Mumbai Debojyoti has traveled throughout India and has performed solo alongside great stalwarts of Indian Classical music like Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia.

Speciality of his playing Sitar derived from years of hard work, thoughtful creative analysis, dedication and rigorous riyaz. It is a style which combines tantrakari and khayal gayki aang and translate it into the string of Sitar with colorful tones which captures the minds of the listenersfrom very start to the end.
